Kids In The Kitchen

Kids in the Kitchen's 2013-2014 goals are to engage children in the preparation of healthy meals as a means to help educate them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices through the first annual JLW Healthy Kids Fun and Fit Fair.  The purpose of Kids in the Kitchen is to help promote nutrition, reduce obesity and educate children on the value of healthy ingredients and appropriate portion sizes.

This year’s event was held on November 9th in partnership with the City of Waco at the Bledsoe Miller Community Center.  We serviced over 120 children, ages 1-15 from Waco and surrounding communities.  Kids in the Kitchen is a nationally recognized health education program that supports the physical development of children and adolescents in McLennan County by providing them with knowledge on food preparation, nutrition, portion control and healthy food alternatives to help win the fight against childhood obesity.

The event focused on physical fitness activities with Crossfit Misfits obstacle course, kid’s Zumba by JLW member Kat Evans and a friendly yoga class led by JLW sustainer Dianne DeMoville. The Baylor University cheerleaders, song leaders and Broozer the Bear also helped the children participate.   We also provided a rock climbing wall, a Velcro wall and several other bounce houses provided by Action Rental.

To increase a healthy lifestyle each child was allowed to decorate an apron, and a recipe folder that included important snack information, grocery shopping tips and healthy alternative food choices.  We also provided a cooking demonstration by Chef Hewlett, culinary arts instructor at TSTC and all participants were provided  the ingredients to prepare Pot Pie Cupcakes at home! In addition each child decorated a clay pot and planted a broccoli plant provided by Home Depot to take home and use to make Broccoli Bites!  Both recipes are attached!

Thank you to our sponsors who helped make the event successful:  City of Waco and staff of Bledsoe Miller Community Center, Texas Tape and Label, Home Depot, Baylor cheerleaders, HOT Sweethearts, Crossfit Misfits, Action Rental and IDIQ Construction Management.

On November 21st Kids in the Kitchen teamed up with Bledsoe Miller Community Center and Texas A&M Cooperative Extension to educate parents on how to prepare healthy meals for the holidays and how to properly prep foods.

In April we will sponsor an after school Kids in the Kitchen event with Dewey Community Center. We will be able to host 80 children in their program with another education and arts and crafts festival to help promote awareness on healthy choices, recipes, physical activities and FUN!
