The Clifton House

The Clifton House, located at 2600 Austin Avenue, was built in 1921 by Albert Turner Clifton. The Clifton family has been prominent in the development of business, philanthropic, and social life of Waco for well over 100 years.

On May 23, 1950, the Clifton property was purchased by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) as a residence for young working women and as a site for community activities.

In August 1989, the Junior League of Waco, Inc., with assistance from a Cooper Foundation grant, purchased the Clifton House and adjoining carriage house to use as a permanent headquarters. Renovation of the house began in the summer of 1991 and was completed in December 1992. JLW’s intention for the property was to serve as a way to foster collaboration between non-profit groups, offering an affordable and well-maintained setting for organizations throughout the community while also preserving a Waco landmark.
